In August of this year certain facts were communic to the xport Licence Department which tended to sho that morphia was indeed being exported to Japan under name of Aspirin or of so other fine chemical. Cor letter from a Japanese firm, Gohei Iwatsubo, of Kyots produced to the Department by a London firm in which Buggestion was mude that to avoid the stringent morp restrictions, morphia ahould be invoic.d under a "c favourable" nume; and the latter conveyed the impre... The British that this had been done by other firms. concerned stated that t`ey had buen making enquiries that although they had no definite information, they under the impression that morphia was being exortei this country to Japan under the name of Aspirin and the gre ter part of this traffic was taking place by parcele post.

In the circumstances the Customs authorities ware immediately requested by the port Licence Depart arrange for the examination of a number of poutal of fine chemicals, e.g. Aspirin, Phenacetin, Phenaz nacked in 5 lb, tins, addressed to Japan, or Jajand houses in the United States, with a view to abce tal whether the contents were actually these chuuicals morphia. Two consignmente of chaliels analysed, i consequence of this request, by the Government Che been found to be in order, but the Oustoms authoriti been desired to make further examinations, preferab consignments described as Aspirin.
